The GAMMA European MMA Championships 2021 will take place in Tbilisi, Georgia from 5-9 October after being moved from Lamia, Greece as a result of the wildfire crisis in the country.
The Global Association of Mixed Martial Arts (GAMMA) signed an agreement with the Georgian organisers on the final day of the recently concluded GAMMA Asian MMA Championships 2021, which were successfully held in Cholpon-Ata, Kyrgyzstan.
“The signing with Georgia reflects the excellent progress being made by GAMMA to solidify amateur MMA’s stature globally while guaranteeing a prosperous future for the sport. We are excited to be headed to Georgia, which has long had a great passion for mixed martial arts,” said GAMMA President Alex Engelhardt.
The Championships were initially scheduled to take place in Greece but was moved to avoid putting any further strain on the local authorities currently battling with the fallout from the wildfires in the country.
The difficult decision was made jointly between GAMMA and the local organisers, with the priority being to stage the competition in a safe environment.
“I want to thank our friends in Greece for their understanding and all their hard work to this point,” Engelhardt added. “We are disappointed the Championships could not take place there this year, but we are confident we will be back as soon as the circumstances allow it. We send them all our best during this challenging time.”
