GAMMA Ireland will be fielding a national team of seniors and youths to compete in mixed martial arts in the 2024 GAMMA European Championships in Slovakia from 12 – 19 May.

The Championships is to be hosted by the Slovak MMA Association (SOMMA) at the Bellevue Grand Hotel in the beautiful mountain region of Vysoké Tatry. The team will be led by Team Ireland coaches Ben Davis and Gary Morris, who have been coaching most of the team at their academies.

On the squad is returning medallist David Costello (pictured) who earned a bronze medal in the 2023 U18 World MMA Championships in Greece, in the under-16s category. This time, participating in the under-18s, he is setting his sights higher: “Competing in the GAMMA European Championships is a dream come true. My goal? Nothing less than gold.”

GAMMA Ireland official Paul Cowzer commented:

“This will be our biggest Irish team to date. We have had lots of time to prepare our team. They have competed against each other at local GAMMA Ireland Championships, and always support each other when we’re competing on the regional Irish and UK MMA scene.

“Fighters to look out for will be John O’Sullivan, 63kg U18. He fought at last year’s All-Irelands, losing to Rian Dunn Leavy, GAMMA World bronze medallist, by decision. Although John lost that fight, he showed great heart and was never deterred. Since then, he has gained new skills and experience. Also, looking forward to seeing Davy Costello‘s improvements. Last year he bagged a bronze medal at the GAMMA Worlds.

“Adult 47kg female Sinead Lavin will bring bags of Irish heart in what will be her natural weight division. The next fighter to look out for is Indra Davis, adult female at 61kg. She is a former GAMMA Ireland champion, a pro MMA fighter and a brown belt in Jiu-Jitsu. Coach and husband Ben Davis trained her from scratch, so knows her style inside out. She will be tough to beat. Last but not least in this family of fighters, is Ben’s son Mateo Davis, who has competed in many regional jiu-jitsu events from white belt to yellow belt, where he is currently ranked. He has one kickboxing and two MMA bouts under his belt. He will compete with spirit and gain valuable experience, win or lose, but for sure he has a chance to be champion of Europe. These are just a few of our team, though we can tell you this about us all: the Irish will come with love, laughter, but also to fight!”
