An Irish mother and son from Galway will be competing alongside each other in MMA, as part of the national squad for the 2024 GAMMA European Championships in Slovakia from 12 – 19 May.

Indra Davis and son 10-year-old Mateo Davis with be competing at the Bellevue Grand Hotel in the beautiful High Tatras mountains in senior and youth tournaments respectively.

Both touted as champions material, they will have the opportunity to bring home a gold, silver or bronze medal for Ireland. Indra has credentials as former GAMMA Ireland national champion, a pro MMA competitor and a brown belt in Jiu-Jitsu, while Mateo has competed in many regional jiu-jitsu events at white and yellow belt and is nationally ranked. He has one kickboxing and two MMA bouts to his name.

They are coached by husband and father Ben Davis, a well-known professional fighter whose last signing was with major league PFL for a bout that was unfortunately cancelled. Acting as squad coach, Ben previously led an Irish team to the GAMMA World Championships in Singapore and the last GAMMA Euros.

Mateo’s 12-year-old sister also competes in jiu jitsu to complete this fighting family of four and will be cheering on her sibling and mother at the Euros. The family owns Shaolin MMA Gym where they “practically live.. coming home to eat and sleep,” and Indra teaches women’s MMA, which she is passionate about promoting.

Indra works as a Youth Justice and Development Officer for the Irish Department of Justice by day and fell into MMA by “accidental development” by virtue of her husband’s MMA career and the gym: “I didn’t start in martial arts until I already had a career and kids, so I have never been looking to replace those things. MMA is passion and a hobby for me, and I look forward to getting back to competition.”

As for Mateo, how does he feel about competing?  “To be honest, I’m really cocky so I’ll be fine! I’m most excited about travelling to another country. But if I can win a medal, it will make me proud of my dad too and I will brag about it to all my friends.”
